How to pay as little as 25 pence a litre
Dec 03, 2007 Easier Motoring

"Car sharing has seen a significant increase in popularity in recent months as UK motorists seek new ways of cutting the cost of motoring with petrol prices rising to an all time high; forecourts are now forced to sell fuel at over a £1 a litre. Car sharing offers a great solution to the rising costs of transport; operators of the UK’s largest car share network, liftshare.com, demonstrate how you can dramatically cut your fuel costs and pay as little as 25 pence per litre! A car with two occupants is twice as efficient as the same car with a single occupant. Car sharing with one other will cut CO2 emissions and slash your travel costs in half! A car with more passengers will reduce your costs even further. A car with four occupants can reduce your fuel costs by 75% There are already more than 200,000 registered carsharers in the UK benefiting financially and contributing to an estimated saving of over 13,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year. More than 4,500,000 trees would have to be planted to achieve the same impact on CO2 levels. Regular car sharer Almina from Harrogate comments; “My car sharer and I are now good friends. We look forward to our drives to and from work and both enjoy having someone to chat to on the dull commute! And it was so easy to get into a routine and we both love the fact that we're saving money!” The pioneering liftshare network has seen increased popularity as the British public seeks more sustainable transport options to abate the rising fuel prices, industrial action on public transport and the heavy rush-hour congestion. ..."

Birmingham City Council's A47 'Car Share' Lane Duplicity Exposed
Nov 27, 2007 Association of British Drivers

"Furthermore, Birmingham City Council is not replicating the best practice examples when it comes to running a car share scheme. Rather than promote a service that would enable all individuals to find travel companions, such as the free site www.birminghamcarshare.com, they are trying to promote a system that only works if you happen to work at one of 5 local employers. There are 3 similar car share lanes already operating in the UK and each one of them promotes a website service that works for individuals as well as companies — www.liftshare.com. The site is supported by over 300 local authorities in the UK and has over 200,000 members - questions should be asked as to why Birmingham City Council does not also promote this service...."

Walk buddies
Nov 14, 2007 BBC radio 4 ipm

"Peeved at petrol costing £1 a litre? Thinking about using the car less? Looking forward to a visit next year from your own personal travel adviser? Then how about this? It's from the same people who came up with liftshare a website that helps people share car journeys. Only they've taken the idea one step further ( geddit? ) This new scheme matches individuals with others walking the same way so they can walk together. iPM has been speaking to its founder - Ali Clabburn. (soundbyte) But is letting anyone know where you walk - and when you walk - such a good idea? How do you share safely such personal information without running the risk that you give away too much about yourself and your whereabouts? Here's Ali Clabburn again, (soundbyte) So let's meet two women who have recently become Walkbudi's (soundbyte) My guess is that it's going to take something radical to lure us away from the comfort and convenience of the car - but would you be tempted to give this a go?..."

Award for Liftshare website
Nov 01, 2007 Eastern Daily Press

" Liftshare - an online journey-matching site run by Attleborough-based Ali Clabburn - won the entrepreneur of the year award; Eastern Storage Equipment, based in Norwich, which makes and supplies commercial storage equipment, won the award for “impact of technology on your business”; Pilot Drilling Control, a Lowestoft manufacturer of drilling tools for the oil and gas industry, won the award for performance through people; and the green award was won by Petans - a charity based in Horsham St Faith, near Norwich, that provides safety training for the offshore oil and gas industry, marine businesses and industrial sites. Liftshare was recognised for its national online route-matching system which introduces people travelling in the same direction so they can save time and money and reduce their environmental impact. The free national network has nearly 200,000 members reducing carbon dioxide emissions by almost 13,000 tonnes per year. “The east of England is full of enterprising companies, so to win this award is fantastic for me and my brilliant team,” said Mr Clabburn. “As more individuals and organisations look for ways to cut their costs and reduce their carbon footprint, we are in a great position to help them achieve both aims.”..."

Entrepreneur scoops innovation award
Oct 30, 2007 Norwich Evening News

"A Norfolk entrepreneur has scooped another accolade after winning a prestigious award for his innovative business. Ali Clabburn, founder of Liftshare.com, has been awarded the East of England Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2007. His Attleborough-based company was recognised for its national online route-matching system which introduces people travelling in the same direction at the same time. The award comes after a string of accolades, including winning the Enterprising Young Brits competition in 2005, since he set up the business in 1998. Mr Clabburn said: “As more individuals and organisations look for ways to cut their costs and reduce their carbon footprint, we are in a great position to help them achieve both aims.” Now, Mr Clabburn is in the running for the National Chamber of Commerce Award, which will be announced and presented at a gala dinner at the Victoria and Albert Museum in central London on the November 29. Mr Clabburn came up with the idea for Liftshare.com when he was a student and wanted to help people save money and the environment. He had travelled around Germany as an 18-year-old using the German car sharing scheme and was amazed to find no such scheme in the UK. He realised there was a gap in the market and spent the next few years looking into setting up a scheme in Britain. The free of charge national network now has more than 196,000 members who are reducing CO2 emissions by almost 13,000 tonnes per year. It is estimated that a typical car sharer will save about £1,000 and one tonne of CO2 per year by sharing their daily journey - about 10pc of an individual's carbon footprint. Liftshare provides car sharing schemes to more than 900 clients...."

How to make your money go further when you travel
Oct 16, 2007 Esther Shaw Independent

"One alternative for "green motorists" is car-sharing, where drivers find passengers who are making the same journey as themselves. This is designed to reduce CO2 emissions and the number of vehicles on the road, and also reduces costs for drivers as the fuel costs are shared with the passengers. There are now many car-sharing organisations in operation. These include freewheelers.com, and liftshare.org. ..."

No rush to join car-share scheme
Jun 29, 2007

"MOST people who travel to work alone in their car do not lift share because it is difficult to organise and inconvenient, according to a survey carried out by The Comet. The poll was carried out among staff at The Comet office to mark lift share day last week. It revealed that 94 per cent of the staff who replied travelled to work by car and 81 per cent of those car users only ever have one person in the vehicle. The most common reason for not sharing was that it is difficult to organise (37.5 per cent), followed by a lack of colleagues living nearby (31.3 per cent). Other explanations offered for not sharing included "I don't want to", which was the answer given by 12.5 per cent of the car drivers. When asked if they were interested in taking part in a car share trial, 68.75 per cent said they weren't. A second survey carried out during a morning rush hour showed 86 per cent of cars were without passengers. Yet car sharing is increasingly seen as a way of reducing carbon emissions and solving problems with congestion. The website www.liftshare.org estimates that a typical car sharer will save themselves around £1,000 and one tonne of CO2 per year by sharing their daily journey. Susan Dye, North Herts' local representative of Transport 2000, said: "Car sharing works best when it's part of an overall plan by the employer to encourage all different kinds of ways of getting to work - cycling, walking, public transport, as well as co-ordinated lift-sharing." She added: "Employers who step back and involve their staff in actively surveying their own travel behaviour and designing what they can do about it get the best results." Regarding The Comet statistics, Susan said: "The message is, at The Comet, probably half of the drivers would change if someone researched the alternatives for them and the company rewarded them for trying out alternatives. "The Comet office is in central Stevenage, only a few minutes walk from the rail and bus stations. "While journalists need to get about by car to cover stories, there will be administrative and support staff whose journeys are more predictable and don't have to travel in the course of the day. "If they had to pay tax on their parking space then the cost of getting the train or bus or the effort of cycling would appear less daunting." She added: "All successful schemes offer a back-up if the lift falls through. This is usually guaranteed payment for a taxi home. "This sounds expensive, but in reality it is rarely ever used and provides the psychological security for people to try lift-sharing. "Most employers don't believe the taxi offer won't be abused by selfish staff, but that's just typical of management cynicism, and it simply isn't borne out of experience." "Bedfordshire County Council operates a successful car-share scheme, which gives those taking part priority parking," said portfolio holder for customer services Cllr John Street. "We run a number of other schemes to encourage staff and councillors to find alternative ways of travelling to work other than in their cars." A spokesman for Hertfordshire County Council said: "The council offers priority parking for car sharers and also has pools of car sharers travelling from similar locations so there is more choice. For example you could travel into work with one person and travel home with another. "Another incentive is that people don't have to make a commitment for every day, they are able to car share as and when it is convenient. "The general reason for people not wanting to car share is the difficulty in organising and having to start work and leave work at a time that may not be convenient. "Another way we are getting around this is to provide staff with the ability to work from home so that if they need to leave before they have finished a piece of work, they are able to finish it at home. "We have found some reluctance among staff to participate in car sharing, but found that when people do start they tend to enjoy it and have made new friends." For more information and to see if anyone in your area would like to car share, visit www.liftshare.org..."

How green was Glastonbury?
Jun 29, 2007 Sian Berry

"Along with about 200,000 others, I'm in recovery from the Glastonbury festival at the moment. I was there to help promote the 4x4 campaign, sharing a marquee in the Greenfields with a wide range of groups taking direct action to help make our transport more sustainable. Along with 'antis' like the brilliant Plane Stupid and activists fighting to stop the pointless and expensive widening projects for the M1 and M6 motorways, we had groups promoting positive alternatives, including Liftshare, who help people reduce their transport emissions by sharing car journeys, and City Car Club, who provide handy roadside vehicles for instant hire, reducing unnecessary journeys and helping to puncture our culture of car ownership. I left a day early (just in time it turned out) to get back for a Debate London event at the Tate and caught a train back on Sunday afternoon, my every possession damp, muddy and twice as heavy as when I arrived. As I sat down and watched the smell of evaporating filth wafting up the nostrils of my fellow passengers, I wondered “ just how green was Glastonbury 2007? It's easy to be cynical about big events like this, especially if you have been reading endless articles in magazines about how to do "festival chic", and I expect co-sponsor Greenpeace will be publishing some kind of audit in due course, but I predict the answer will be "quite green actually", and here's my back-of-the-envelope guide to prove it. On ecology first then. Admittedly, we had turned a few hundred acres of glorious rolling farmland into an epic quagmire in a matter of hours but, given time to recover, the Eavis' farm should be back to normal fairly quickly. I did worry a bit when they started putting straw on the paths to give us a bit more traction. If the weather gets hot it will be interesting to see how they clear it up, seeing as the clay soil means much of the farm will essentially be paved with brick. I know at least a few hundred mobile phones are mixed up in there too, which will be fun for future archaeologists to uncover. Food is a more clear-cut positive. I'm no longer being a real vegetarian about my diet, but I was practically vegan for most of the time at Glastonbury. Even if you want meat it can be a bit of an effort to seek it out, particularly around the network of Greenfields at the south end of the site. Much of the food was also local (fresh milk was brought round every day), and the many caterers included staff from a nearby school who produced an endless stream of fantastic cakes, and a wide range of organic and fair trade caffs, most of which gave out coffee in real mugs that they washed up. There were no ready-meals or polystyrene packaging that I could see, and the disposable plates and beer cups were made of paper, which meant they could go into the many compost bins. The organisers made a real effort to provide separate bins for recycling too, and the categories were fairly well respected by the punters. All good stuff, and almost certainly better than we'd have managed at home. Green education initiatives were absolutely everywhere, with large areas of space given over to the three charities benefiting from the event “ Greenpeace, Oxfam and Water Aid, as well as the iCount climate campaign. Videos promoting these causes were shown between bands on the main stages and of course there were the acres of Greenfields with everything from yoga and various flavours of healing to radicals like CND and Schnews. Transport is a tricky one. The big bands do tend to fly in specially, and there are constant helicopters hovering overhead. And yes, the festival is responsible for a lot of people travelling around the country, but in our campaign tent we didn't meet any festival-goers who had driven there on their own, let alone flown to Somerset. The most interesting thing about the chart we used in our marquee to help people work out their transport footprint in colour-coded duplo bricks (yes it did help to bring the kids in too) was that carrying several people in a reasonably efficient car can bring the per-person carbon emissions down below even a train. Congestion of course is a separate issue, and the most efficient mode of all is a full coach, which again was a bit of a surprise for most people. And then there's the displacement effect. Similar to my tactic of persuading my family to join me for a holiday in the Lake District this year, it's highly likely that, for many of the people there, the festival was taking the place of a weekend in Prague, Dublin or something worse in their annual holiday routine. So, overall, I don't think the transport impact of Glastonbury is all that bad. Now, water “ not the stuff that kept falling out of the sky but those dreaded loos. It's not something I'd want to do forever, but whether we were using the portaloos or the infamous 'long drops'(basically “very basically 2 a row of toilet cubicles perched above a pit of sewage) I don't think any of us will have flushed a toilet all week. Combine the fact that each flush avoided saves up to nine litres of water with the fact that almost no-one showered at all, and you have a considerable water conservation effort going on. The irony of the fact that it rained so heavily I managed to wash my hair in it does not escape me. So, overall, my verdict is a thumbs up for Glastonbury 2007. We need more of these things, ideally on weekends less blighted by the weather. See you at the Big Green Gathering in August!..."

New help to drive Greener
Jun 29, 2007 Chris Starkie

"A group of entrepreneurs from Norfolk are hoping to cash in on the nation's desire to go green with the launch of a website selling lower polluting vehicles. Yourgreencar.com, based in Hethersett, has been established by a team led by former Inchcape executive Jon Syder and Jon Kirk, the former marketing director of Norwich-based online insurance site Its4me.co.uk. The team also includes Peter Reeve and Andrew Smith, both of whom come from a motor industry background. Yourgreencar.com claims to drive down the price of environmentally friendly cars by offering discounts on low emission and hybrid cars such as the Toyota Prius and Honda Civic. As drivers become more aware of the effects of global warming, the car industry is responding by increasing its focus on the research and develop-ment of vehicles with lower emissions. But Yourgreencar.com says that even with this investment, accessibility is still very limited due to premium prices and a lack of choice. Yourgreencar.com is looking to open up the market and make low emission vehicles more accessible to the mainstream car-buying consumer. Mr Syder, managing director of Yourgreencar.com, said: "The environ-mentally friendly car market is growing rapidly as demand increases and drivers swap their gas guzzlers for greener alternatives. The problem, though, is that people wanting to reduce their carbon emissions are limited in choice and have no easy way of accessing a car's green credentials. "Carbon-conscious drivers should not have to pay more - it's in everyone's interest for people to drive greener cars. The government has helped raise the profile of green issues but it now needs to offer more incentives for research and development to car manufacturers, especially considering its commitment to help limit climate change." Yourgreencar.com offsets the first 12,000 miles of carbon emissions on every car purchased and the discounted prices enable customers to save up to £3,000 on the cost of a vehicle. In addition to providing competitive deals on low emission cars, Yourgreencar.com also provides comprehensive information about all the different environmentally friendly cars available and enables people to search for vehicles by CO2 emissions and energy band. The UK's largest carshare network, Attleborough-based Liftshare.com, is celebrating the recruitment of a record number of members on National Liftshare Day which took place last Thursday. The company signed up 700 members during the day - and 3,000 during the course of last week. Liftshare.com's members are now sharing trips over an estimated distance of 40 million miles a year. Liftshare has also won two more awards - the company picked up a prize at the Business Commitment to the Environment Awards for Best Product and the Kyocera GreenLight award for identifying and meeting an environmental challenge...."

Is it green to go to Glastonbury?
Jun 29, 2007 Lucy Siegie

"As long as you don't fly there - or leave tents, wellies or litter behind - you can enjoy a guilt-free festival, says Lucy Siegle Not all festivals are created equal. A rare few sit at the 'excellent' end of the ecologically friendly scale, notably Fuji Rocks in Japan. There, participants can't walk more than 200 yards without recyclers yelling at them by megaphone that the labels must be peeled off water bottles and all materials deposited into the relevant bins. Revellers can be summarily marched from proceedings for dropping a cigarette butt (a beautiful river runs through the festival site and is protected from such toxic travesties) and it's not uncommon to look down at the end of a headline act and not see a single piece of litter where 60,000 people stood. 'It's amazing,' one British promoter told me of Fuji Rocks, 'nobody throws pints of urine across the crowd. Not even at the front.' True, he is linked to one of the more 'laddish' festivals, but it suggests that British festivals have work to do. If you plan to bask in the sun at Glastonbury (I am channelling positive weather thoughts for you), you are midway on the eco-festival scale. It's a festival truism that the bigger the stages, the bigger the sound and lights, the higher the carbon burden. Smaller, alternative festivals are increasingly using bio-diesel generators, as at the Outsider (www.highland2007.com), but Glastonbury's Green Fields are trying hard with renewable electricity and solar-heated showers, courtesy of Greenpeace, boosted by a wood-pellet-fed boiler. As a staggering 12m people go to UK festivals, we can only breathe a sigh of relief that a (belated) green agenda is now getting through, thanks in no small part to pioneering website www.agreenerfestival.com, which extensively researches and audits the 200 main music events, and has challenged them all to have a green plan in place for next year. But don't wait for the organisers. From the Big Chill (regarded as pretty green these days) to V and Reading (seen as eco slackers), you make your own ethical luck. Some 80 per cent of your festival footprint is determined by how you get there: try a car share (www.liftshare.com) or catch a coach. If you are going to Glastonbury via the www.flyglastonbury.com luxury heliport, you're beyond redemption. Travel light. Piles of abandoned post-festival junk usually include excess clothes and radios (the relevance of which is oblique at a music event). On average, 2,000 tents are abandoned after the Reading and Leeds festivals, so start by reusing a tent in the boy-scout sustainable manner or at least donating yours to Global Hand's Give Me Shelter project (www.globalhand.org). Sadly, there is no such grateful recipient of abandoned wellies - Dunlop has retired its UK welly-recycling programme. Counter-intuitively, embracing your inner eco hippie is about conforming - adhere to all recycling instructions, with or without megaphone instruction, and use designated toilets, however grim. Streams of urine flowing into local waterways represent eco disaster rather than a free-spirited outpouring. Besides, Glastonbury's toilet facilities represent one of the last genuine rock'n'roll experiences...."

Council staff's car-share scheme gets on the road
Jun 20, 2007 Linda McKee

" More than 2,000 council staff in the south of the province will be able to save fuel costs - and the environment - with the unveiling of a new car share scheme today. The Southern Group councils hope more than £1m a year can be saved, and commuter traffic slashed, if employees sign up to the Travelwise NI Car Share Scheme managed by Roads Service. Commuters simply log on to the online car-share website and register free of charge to find their partners. When they register as making a similar journey at around the same time every day, the computer matches them up and exchanges email addresses. Brian Moreland, head of Travelwise NI, said that car-sharers can expect to significantly cut their carbon footprint, save on travel costs and reduce road congestion. "Being able to find a suitable car-share partner is the key to getting started and this partnership will make it easier for council employees to find their perfect match," he said. "Each of the Southern Group employees who participate can expect to make significant energy and financial savings. Research shows that the typical car-sharer will save around £1,000 and one tonne of CO2 per year by sharing their daily journey. "In the course of a year, Southern Group employees could be saving over £1m in travel expenses by dramatically reducing the number of car journeys to and from the workplace. "The Travelwise NI Car Share scheme is especially beneficial to those living in more isolated locations. "Those Southern Group employees who live in rural areas may not have access to a regular public transport network. This car share scheme could provide them with a more accessible transport alternative."..."

Match-maker searches for car sharers
Jun 20, 2007 Ryan Davies

"Cobalt's very own matchmaker has made it her mission to match up potential car sharers at Cobalt business park in North Tyneside. Lynn Cramman, Cobalt's on-site transport co-ordinator is encouraging the 6,500 staff at the park to "meet their match" as part of National Lift Share Day. 10 per cent of staff currently travelling by car are taking advantage of the car share scheme and sharing transport costs with other workers at the park. Match-making Lynn will be delivering boxes of matchmaker chocolates to staff who register on the car share website www.cobaltpark.co.uk. Staff can enter their postcode details on the site and Lynn will match them up with potential sharers.Don't miss the 24dash.com audio bulletins for the latest news and information - http://www.24dash.com/podcasts Lynn said: "National Lift Share day is a great way to remind staff of the travel options available to them at the park. We are working hard to improve and extend the transport offering at Cobalt and make it easier for staff to choose cheaper, greener, less stressful means of getting to and from work." Charli Bullock of transport experts Liftshare, said: "We are delighted to continue working alongside Cobalt business park. We are working with the park to help staff reduce their carbon footprint and their travel costs using the car share system in place at Cobalt."..."

Parents urged to car share the school run
Jun 20, 2007 Katie Cooper

"Parents who drive their children to school are being encouraged to take part in a new car share scheme to help cut down the traffic on the roads - and help save the environment. A pilot scheme, overseen by Norfolk County Council, is being launched today in the Drayton and Taverham areas as part of National Liftshare day. It will target parents who use their cars to drop their children off at school before driving to work and urge them to car share with other working parents in the area. A new website will put parents in touch with others living in the same area who may be able to car share across Drayton and Taverham where 2,300 children travel to school every day. The scheme will operate at a number of schools in the area, including Taverham High School, Taverham Middle School, Drayton Middle School, Ghost Hill First School, Nightingale First School and Drayton First School. Neil Toplis deputy headteacher at Drayton Middle School said: "we are now targeting parents rather than children and hope that they will use the website to get in touch with other parents in the area and arrange lift-sharing". Josie Barnett, senior travel plan officer for Norfolk County Council, said: "Working collectively with the schools on travel planning has created a new focus, giving them the strength and enthusiasm to tackle issues on a larger scale". Taverham and Drayton parents can join the area's free car share group by visiting www.norfolkcarshare.com...."

New Liftshare Scheme Launched in Angus
Jun 20, 2007

"Angus residents are being urged to try sharing a car as part of an initiative to reduce traffic, cut pollution and save money. The new web-based car sharing scheme www.angusliftshare.com is to be launched on Thursday, 14 June, National Liftshare Day. The Angus scheme is part of Tayside and Central Transport Partnership's (Tactran) regional car sharing database, www.tactranliftshare.com. The site, funded by the Scottish Executive, forms an umbrella site for the four local authority liftsharing sites. The website is designed to help people find lifts through a database which matches journeys and times of people who live or work in the region. Tactranliftshare is supporting the service as part of its drive to encourage sustainable transport and reduce the number of commuter journeys where only one person is in a car. The safety aspect of the project is of paramount importance, and users cannot look at the personal or journey details of others. Journeys are simply registered and suitable matches are emailed to the recipient with minimal information. This whole process is facilitated through www.angusliftshare.com. People are not even required to have a car to register for a match. With the extensive movement of commuters across the region for work, study and leisure, the introduction of tactranliftshare will benefit many from Angus, Dundee, Perth and Kinross, Stirling and beyond. Anyone can register a journey, whether it is for a daily commute or a one-off journey. Liftshare, based in Norfolk, recently won the 'Best Environmental Product' at the Business Commitment to the Environment Awards for their national online route matching system. The whole Liftshare network has nearly 1000 active schemes running nationwide, which is growing on a daily basis...."

A car shared is a traffic jam halved
Jun 19, 2007 Yorkshire Evening Post - Sophie Hazan

" SHARED journeys are becoming watchwords in Leeds as the city fights the threat of road overload. Motorists in Leeds are being urged to share the stress of the rush hour by joining Leeds's own car-share scheme. To raise awareness of the benefits of car-sharing, Leeds City Council and its partners have relaunched the internet-based scheme "carshareleeds.com". The scheme was first introduced in July 2003 and offers a lift-share matching service, which puts people in contact with possible travelling companions, either for one journey or on a regular basis. Sense Overall, the scheme aims to reduce congestion and relieve parking problems and it also helps travellers share the costs of their journey. Councillor Stuart Andrew, the council's lead member for transport, said: "Car sharing is a practical and environmentally friendly solution which really makes sense. "It not only helps to reduce pollution and congestion on the roads around Leeds but is also cost-effective for travellers. "Carshareleeds.com is an easy-to-use scheme which puts people who are commuting by car to and from Leeds every day in touch with each other, which in turn reduces the amount of traffic on our roads." Since its launch, carshareleeds.com has steadily grown and now has 550 members. The more members there are, the more chance there is of matching them with a suitable travelling companion. Leeds City Council is now working with some of the largest organisations in the city to help promote and increase membership of the scheme. The partner organisations involved so far are HBOS, KPMG, Asda Wal*Mart, Leeds NHS Teaching Hospitals, Leeds Metropolitan University, and Leeds University, Thorpe Park and Yorkshire Forward. Scheme promoters say sharing a car: Reduces the costs of travelling by car. Undercuts the cost of nearly all other forms of transport. Cuts congestion and pollution. Reduces parking problems. Reduces the need for a private car. Widens the recruitment catchment areas for businesses. Provides a real solution to the lack of public transport in rural areas. Facilitates the integration of public and private transport. Is a way of meeting new, like-minded people. People who want to join just need to register their journey details on carshareleeds.com and the database will search for potential matches. It can be used by people who want to give or receive a lift, and can be used just the once or on a regular basis. ..."

Change your World this July
Jun 19, 2007

"THE drive to persuade more people to share cars in Leeds has stepped up a gear. Commuters in the city are being urged to consider sharing their journey to and from work to cut down congestion and pollution. Car sharing is being encouraged this week as part of National Liftshare Day which took place yesterday. The day coincided with the unveiling of a new information sign along the A647 Stanningley Road which advertises the benefits to commuters of sharing journeys into the city. It has been estimated those who share a car can save up to £1,000 on travel and parking costs and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide their vehicles emit by up to one ton every year. Car sharing also helps to reduce journey times by reducing the amount of traffic on the roads at any one time. The new car-share advertising sign was unveiled at the end of the high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane near Gotts Park. Councillor Stuart Andrew, lead member responsible for transport, was joined by car-share co-ordinator Tim Walker and Ray Hill, from Leeds City Council's Travelwise team. Councillor Andrew said: "We hope the new sign will highlight the advantages that car sharing has to offer. "It is a practical and environmentally-friendly solution which can save motorists time and money on a regular basis." National Liftshare Day is co-ordinated by liftshare.com, the UK's largest car-sharing promoter. Anyone can go to www.carshareleeds.com and register their journey for free. They can then find other people going their way with whom to share their journey to work, the shops or anywhere. You don't have to be a driver to take part, and can search for a lift even if you don't drive. Mr Walker, the carshareleeds.com coordinator, said: "This is a great time to join the scheme because membership numbers are rising and the chances of finding a match are better than ever before. "It's so easy to use, with just three simple steps to car share, search, match and then share a car." ..."
